The Occupational Moral Injury Scale (OMIS) is a validated, evidence-based measure developed to assess moral injury risk across a wide range of occupational contexts. Unlike many existing tools, the OMIS captures both exposure to potentially morally injurious experiences — including acts of commission, omission, witnessing, and betrayal — and their psychological impact within a single, integrated framework. This allows organisations to identify not only where ethical strain is occurring, but how it is affecting individuals and teams.
Developed through doctoral research by one of our founders and tested across diverse frontline populations, the OMIS has demonstrated strong reliability, validity, and consistency across roles, sectors, and demographics. Its design enables meaningful comparison across groups while remaining broadly applicable without the need for adaptation.
As the developers and copyright holders of the OMIS, ETHOS Institute offers a distinct advantage. We combine deep scientific expertise with practical application, using the scale within our consulting and research work to provide precise measurement, tailored insights, and targeted strategies to address moral injury risk, strengthen psychosocial safety, and support sustainable performance.
